The Oscars - Red Carpet Jewels 2014

Another awards ceremony has been and gone ... and this one was certainly sparkly in the jewellery department - although a bit lacking for colour with diamonds the overwhelming choice.

If you are an A list star with a shortlist of gowns that you may not chose til the day, perhaps they chose diamonds so they don't have to match colours of gems to the dress?

There were a few more necklaces evident on the big names - Naomi Watts (at top) has regularly worn necklaces to awards ceremonies over the last few years and did so again this time wearing a geometric diamond collar by Bulgari.

Jessica Biel chose an aquamarine and diamond ensemble from Tiffany & Co. from their Blue Book collection.

(this photo is from Jessica's facebook page and also shows her Chanel gown and Jimmy Choo shoes)

Jennifer Lawrence repeated her back necklace idea again this year with Neil Lane diamonds,  although it looked fine from the front,  I think the look was more successful at the back of the gown last year with a longer necklace.

Charlize Theron went for a pendant look with a 31 carats diamond studded drop by Harry Winston.  It look fabulous with her sleek black gown.

Kristen Bell wore a Piaget diamond collar along with her pale dress and could have been quite ice-maiden without the soft hair updo.

Idina Menzel is quoted as requesting Italian jewellery company Chimento to design a collar for her classically styled dress

I did note one necklace with some colour - a labradorite necklace and earring set by Shamila, worn by Suzanne Marques which enhanced her grey dress beautifully.

(Photo from Suzanne Marques FB page as she was sheltering under an umbrella to keep her jewels dry - although it would have hurt the dress more I'm sure!)

Earrings abounded of course, as they always do, and diamonds were once again the favourite.

A highlight in colour were the Tiffany & Co. earrings worn by Amy Adams, featuring pink rhodochrosite and blue lapis lazuli and turquoise.

Cate Blanchett did have a little colour in her white opal and diamond earrings by Chopard but that colour was hardly visible, but I applaud her choice of 'not diamonds'!

Anna Kendrick wore some black gem and diamond drops by Piaget.  Just a little different and a lovely choice.

Calista Flockhart added a pop of colour to her otherwise white ensemble with emerald and diamond earrings by Jacob & Co.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum wore Lorraine Schwartz diamonds as did Sandra Bullock.

Julia Roberts went for diamonds by Bulgari...

...and Penelope Cruz chose diamonds by Chopard...

...while Angelina Jolie reportedly spent quite a bit of time finding just the right pair of diamonds to go with her dress.  The diamonds total a hefty 42 carats and were made into earrings by her jeweller.

Not adding colour but at least not completely diamonds, Olivia Wilde went for white agate and diamond drop earrings by Lorraine Schwartz.

And with the barest hint of colour were Shaun Robinson's earrings.

So, would you wear diamonds down the red carpet or go for some gems of colour?

Till next

Jewellery of the 2014 BAFTA's

Earlier this week London hosted the BAFTA awards and although a lower-key affair than its American counterparts, a wonderful array of stars walked down the red carpet.   Jewellery was heavily diamond based (as usual) although there were more necklaces to be seen rather than the almost exclusively bare-neck-and-earrings look that tends to grace most red carpets.

Cate Blanchett wore a Chopard white gold and diamond pendant.  From the "Animal World" collection it featured diamond doves that moved!  Bonus points for something different Cate :)

Lea Seydoux wore large Chopard diamond earrings that were enhanced by her Veronica Lake style hairstyle.

Helen Mirren wore diamonds from London's jewellery icon, Asprey, that had to compete with her glittery gown.

Uma Thurman wore a classic necklace from Chopard with 32 carats of diamonds that suited her black sheath dress.

Michelle Rodriguez wore an unusual necklace and bracelet set that went with her edgy leather outfit.

Gillian Anderson went for a vintage gown and matched it with a Adler sapphire and diamond necklace and earring set.

Samantha Banks wins my vote for something different (closely followed by Cate's pendant) as she wore pearls!  Pearls are always gorgeous but there is a definite lack of them on the red carpet.   Samantha didn't wear just any pearls of course, but a long necklace of gold and natural toned South Sea pearls by Yoko London, that she wore doubled.  It set off her plain cream dress beautifully!

What was your favourite?

Till next :)

Jewels of the Golden Globes 2014

Award season has started and so I've started peering at the stars ... not at their dresses, hair, shoes or makeup.. but at their jewels!

The usual penchant for earrings was evident again, as was a heavy reliance on diamonds.  Notably the earring size is reducing, smaller sized drops were far more evident this year.

Necklaces were few and far between, but when donned, they were statement pieces.    Case in point is Sophie Vergara (above).  Her bright blue carved turquoise and diamond Lorraine Schwartz necklace was certainly big and bright and noticeable.  People either love it with her plain black gown... or hate it.   It's certainly a startling contrast and definitely showcases the necklace beautifully... and yes, it made her stand out amongst a sea of diamonds!

So, in no particular order (actually it is alphabetical by first name!)  these ladies stood out in the jewel department for wearing something just a little different...

Allison Williams wore a mix of black and white with her smaller sized drop earrings.   Diamonds in white gold and a black gem hanging below.

Amy Adams chose diamonds but with a more daring persuasion - this large (30carat) diamond pendant by Lorraine Schwartz on an extra long chain matched her plunging neckline.  Can't see the pendant? ... keep scrolling... there it is... waaaay down there!

Angela Bassett wore black tassel earrings that co-ordinated well with her dress.

Ariel Winter chose multicoloured gemstone hoop earrings by Brumani for an exotic touch.

Aubrey Plaza wore a beautiful collar of multi coloured sapphires by Lorraine Schwartz.

Cate Blanchett chose diamonds to go with her black lace gown... but oh, what diamonds!   Apparently Chopard also supplied her with security guards.

Dianne Wiest sparkled in golden tones - possible topaz - that sparkled with every move she made - and she moved alot.

Emma Roberts decided to contrast her sleek black gown with very large chandelier style turquoise earrings  - perhaps she had the same stylist as Sophie Vergara wearing black and blue?

Heidi Klum had a definite boho flavour to her outfit, aided by the Lorraine Schwartz necklace of black and white diamonds.

Dame Helen Mirren sparkled ALOT.  A beaded aqua gown was complemented by Bulgari emerald and diamond earrings.

Jennifer Lawrence wore an interesting white dress with black trim which has received questionable reviews, however her jade, diamond, black spinel, onyx and coral earrings by Neil Lane are universally loved.

Julia Roberts added some old world glamour to the evening with her classic hair and makeup and rather large diamond studs by Harry Winston.  Now if you're going to do diamond studs, THIS is the way to do them!

Julianna Margulies wore black enamel, diamond and gold earrings that went beautifully with her black and gold gown.

Kaley Cuoco wore a nice pair of ruby and diamond drop earrings

Kyra Sedgwick chose Irene Neuwirth amazonite and emerald earrings that complemented her coral coloured dress without overwhelming it.

Leslie Mann wore simple smoky quartz and gold drops

Mayim Bialik had black stone and diamond earrings... I'll take an educated guess and say they're by Kimberly McDonald - but I haven't been able to obtain confirmation yet.

Melissa Rauch also has my stamp of approval with diamond studded gold drops - diamonds but different to the standard.

Paula Patton wore some big rocks on her ears... I would assume white topaz or rock crystal quartz going by the size!

Rashida Jones chose a pearl vine style earring that climbed up her ears.

Sarah Paulson glowed in white opal and diamond earrings by Irene Neuwirth.

Shaun Robinson chose the extra large size in earrings...

Tatiana Maslany chose to wear her long chain earrings from the top of and then behind her ears. An effective shortening technique!

Taylor Swift  chose ruby and diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwartz.

Uma Thurman may have had mixed reviews about her gown, but its hard to complain about her Chopard diamond earrings.

Zooey Deschanel was whimsical in Neil Lane flower shaped drop earrings featuring pearls.

So what was your favourite jewel down the red carpet?
